WWTP Manager training realised in Croatia several times with big success

The success story began with the cooperation between TCC Danubius and the German DWA for creating a curriculum for this modular 6 weeks training. With the financial support of the Ministry of Environment of Baden-Württemberg the challenging task to break down the 3 years vocational qualification of the German WWTP technician to a basic training for professionals with other professional background, like electrician or mechanics, has been solved. Supported by the German DBU the prototype of this course was implemented for the first time in 2016. After the excellent feed-back from the participants and further negotiations with the State Agency for Water “Hrvatske Vode” all training participants received a success based grant. After passing the final exam the utilities received 80% of the paid training fee back from Hrvatske Vode when presenting the TCC certificate. This co-financing model was very successful and 105 persons passed the special WWTP training in the years 2017 and 2018.

The dots correspond to the origin of the participants for the WWTP Manager training. Especially rural areas with small utilities still need basic qualification. But also some bigger agglomerations have not enough person with specific knowledge. Still a lot of efforts need to be realised.

Sewage Sludge Treatment and Recycling in Germany

TV reportage of HRT Croatia about sewage sludge treatment and recycling in Germany (11.-12.01.2018)

TCC Danubius and GWP (German Water Partnership) invited Mladen Iličkovic, the responsible journalist of environmental broadcast "Eko Zona" for a trip to Germany for receiving first hand information about sludge strategies and technologies in Germany. In this context the little delegation visited WWTP Augsburg, the WWTP Ulm/Neu-Ulm and the solar drying plant Gärtringen. State Secretary Dr. André Baumann from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Protection and Energy Sector Baden Württemberg explained at the end the strategy for sewage sludge in this Bundesland. Conclusion: there is a high risk of continuous contamination with micropollutants (pharmaceuticals, microplastics, etc) and uncontrolled hygienic conditions if sewage sludge goes directly after dewatering in agricultural use. Recommendation: Drying minimum to 90% for hygenisation and obtaining an alternative fuel. Phosphor recycling from monoincinerated ashes is state of the art. Fertiliser industry is keen to receive this basic mineralic product containing also the phosphor and Baden Württemberg is promoting this way of recycling, because clean phosphor resources are very limited.

Specific training for the Croation WASTE WATER Sector

Already for the forth time our training "Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Manager" started again on 11th of September 2017 at the premises of WWTP Zagreb with the kind support of the private operator ZOV. The participants from the utilities are financially supported by the State Agency Hrvatske Vode, who aims for performance improvement of the Croatian water sector with specific qualification programmes as offered by TCC Danubius.

This 30 days basic course for operational staff and managers provides technical and practice oriented insight to the operation and maintenance of WWTPs. By qualifying operational staff the utilities benefit from a more secure, safe and cost-efficient operation of these complex infrastructures. Some utilities who still do not have a plant already qualify staff in order to smoothen development and implementation of this high investment project.

The WWTP Manager course developped by TCC Danubius, in close cooperation with German DWA, presents also new trends and improvements of the waste water sector and is unique in whole South-East Europe.
